Back to School Time, Anytime
When to start school can be a tough decision, especially in the summertime. The weather is nice, and you might be thinking, "I want to enjoy my summer, then start school." Well you definitely aren't alone in feeling that way, especially since we're all taught to think of fall as "Back to School" time. So much in fact, that our fall classes generally fill up more than classes that start at other times of the year. Here are five reasons you might want to beat the rush:
- Time can slip away in a hurry; why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? We talk to students all the time who postpone school "for a little while". Next thing they know, life takes over. They get focused on family and bills and responsibilities and put their dreams on hold. Read "Never Lose Sight of Your Goals" for two stories that show how putting things off "for a little while" can turn into years of waiting to achieve your dreams.
- Because our summer classes generally don't fill up as much as our fall classes, you have a greater chance of getting a smaller class size and more personalized attention if you start right away. Smaller class sizes could also amount to more time working on guests and getting the practice you need to succeed!
- The sooner you start, the sooner you'll graduate - which translates into getting out into the job market that much sooner. Think about it: since fewer people will have started school at the same time you did, there's a good chance that you'll have less competition for jobs when you graduate.
- You'll have a head start on building your clientele and gain more practice just in time for the busy holiday season! Holidays are always busy times in the beauty industry, and starting now will help you gain the experience, confidence and competence you'll need to be successful.
- It doesn't hurt that Regency is making it easier to enroll right now. For a limited time, Regency's offering an enrollment fee of just $25.
While your friends are working on their tans, you could be working toward your future. Sure, you could wait until fall to start school like everyone else you know...or you could get started now and be miles ahead of the pack before summer's over! Your future isn't going to wait, so why should you?

More is Better
You're thinking of going to school to make a better, brighter future for yourself, right? Then chances are, you'll want to make a career choice that offers you the most bang for your buck. You want to know that you'll find work, and you'll want to know that you have options. Since you're contemplating a future in the beauty industry, we're here to tell you why obtaining a full cosmetology education will serve you best for your future.
With so many programs and licenses available from Nail Technology to Esthetics to Barbering to Cosmetology, there's a lot to ponder. But here's the real deal: no matter what your passion is, a comprehensive cosmetology education equips you to provide a complete range of beauty services hair, nails and skin. Right now, you might think that all you want to do is nails or haircuts, but what if you change your mind later?
Flexibility
Many cosmetologists choose to specialize in one specific area of beauty. You could become a master colorist or a nail artist. Facialist or haircutter. The choices are yours to make, and you can decide to change your path at any given time.
Employability
Full service salons want to hire people who have a well-rounded skill base. Stylists who hold a cosmetology license are prepared to perform a full range of beauty services, giving them a definite edge over someone who holds a specialty license.
What Can a Cosmetologist Do?
Cosmetologists are licensed to perform a wide range of beauty services. We'll start with the most obvious: hair.
- Haircuts: A good haircut is the foundation for any hairstyle. In cosmetology school, you'll be trained to cut hair using shears, clippers, razors, and texturizing and thinning shears to achieve different effects.
- Chemical Services: These include chemical texturizing (permanent waves), coloring/ highlighting, and relaxers.
- Hairstyling: Tools used in hairstyling may include blow dryers, curling irons, rollers, flat irons, pins and clips, and bare hands.
- Analyze and Advise: Cosmetologists are trained to analyze the hair and scalp and make recommendations for treatments or products that will benefit each client.
Beyond hair services, cosmetologists also perform skin care services including the following:
- Facials: Cosmetology school teaches you about the functions of the skin, how to analyze a client's skin type, and how to determine what products or procedures to use. Students are also taught about muscle and nerve function and massage techniques.
- Hair Removal: Cosmetologists have learned about the different products and techniques that are used for waxing to deliver the best results.
- Makeup: Cosmetology students are educated about color and tonal values as well as effects they can create with makeup to minimize flaws or maximize assets.
Finally, cosmetologists can also perform nail services to complete their client's look:
- Manicures: Cosmetology students are taught about nerves and muscles in order to deliver an effective massage during treatment in addition to creative and cosmetic components including polish techniques and nail art.
- Pedicures: Same as manicures, except for feet!
- Sculptured/ Acrylic Nails: As a cosmetology student, you'll learn about the chemicals and tools used for artificial nails as well as artistic elements pertaining to shape and design.
Even if you want to specialize in just one area such as skin or nails, becoming a cosmetologist will allow you to focus on any (or every) aspect of beauty you want to, now and into the future! A full cosmetology program will let you make beauty your business! |

Never Lose Sight of Your Goals
Do you ever feel like your dreams of a career in cosmetology are just that...dreams? Or that your goals are out of reach, or that it's too late to pursue your passion? If so, you're not alone.
Read on for the stories of two Regency students who overcame lots of personal obstacles to turn their dreams into reality. These students are proof positive that no obstacle is too great and it's never too late.
Gail Mueller
Obstacles? This self-proclaimed late bloomer had plenty, starting with her parent's belief that all she had to do was find a decent job and wait for a man to take care of her. Gail Mueller always wanted to go to college, but she ended up working in a factory and waiting for Mr. Right.
Gail got married at age 33, and unfortunately that marriage didn't last. After her divorce, Gail spent some time soul-searching and did indeed find her Mr. Right. They married and had a son. After being a stay-at-home mom for a while, Gail began working full time. When her company announced that they were moving out of the country, Gail decided it was a great opportunity to go back to school and pursue something she always wanted to do - cosmetology.
Gail is now 59 years old and a full time student at Regency's Greenfield campus. "There are people who say I am too old, but it doesn't matter what they say! You are never too old for anything, and I am going to listen to my heart," says Gail. "I feel truly blessed having this opportunity and I'm going to enjoy every moment. I got married late, had a son late, went to college late, and found myself late. But guess what? It's NEVER too late!"
Brenda
Farmer
Marriage, kids, divorces, the need to make a
living...these seem like insurmountable obstacles for many, but for one
part-time student at our Springfield campus they were mere bumps in the
road.
Ever
since she was a little girl, Brenda Farmer wanted to be a
cosmetologist. But those plans were put on hold when she got married at
age 18. Brenda's husband didn't want her to go to school and gradually,
her goals took a back burner to her marriage and three children.
Eventually,
Brenda and her husband went their separate ways. She wanted to go to
cosmetology school, but raising three children as a single mom was
tough. She started cleaning houses to support her family, and once again
she put her dreams on hold. A few years later, Brenda remarried, but
her husband's alcoholism proved more than their marriage could overcome.
Four years later, she was on her own once again.
In
the years that followed, Brenda did more than just get by. She turned
her odd jobs into a successful cleaning business that she's maintained
for 29 years. Still, she wasn't doing what she wanted to, until one day
out of the blue, it occurred to her that there was nothing standing in
her way anymore. She turned her car around, drove to Regency's
Springfield campus, and enrolled right away.
Brenda
"is a great student and is very serious about her education," according
to her Campus Manager, Timi Heaton. "She has waited a long time to be
able to go to cosmetology school and shows her appreciation by her
dedication." 33 years is a long time to wait, but the wait's almost over
- Brenda is due to graduate in just a few months! Way to go, Brenda!
